How are lab-grown gemstones made?
They are grown in controlled laboratories using advanced processes that recreate the conditions needed for gemstone crystals to form. The exact method depends on the gemstone: diamonds may be grown using HPHT or CVD technology, while colored gemstones can be grown using methods such as hydrothermal or flux growth.
Are lab-grown gemstones the real deal?
Yes. A lab-grown emerald is emerald material, a lab-grown sapphire is sapphire material and a lab-grown diamond is diamond material. They share the defining chemical composition, crystal structure and optical properties of their mined counterparts.
Do lab-grown diamonds test as real?
They typically do. Lab-grown and mined diamonds are both crystallized carbon and usually register as diamond on a standard diamond tester. A handheld tester cannot reliably identify origin, and results can vary by device or testing conditions. Specialized equipment and trained analysis are used to distinguish lab-grown origin from mined origin.
Are lab-grown gemstones cheaper?
They are often more affordable than mined stones of comparable type, size and quality because their origin and supply process are different. That can make vivid color or a larger look more accessible. The final jewelry price still depends on the individual gemstone, design, metal, craftsmanship and specifications.
Do your lab-grown diamonds and gemstones come with certifications?
Yes. Every product has its own online LumGem Certificate of Authenticity record, issued by the LumGem Laboratory and available for lookup. It records the product identity and specifications verified by LumGem; it is not an identification or grading report from an independent third-party laboratory. Customers who want additional independent testing may submit an eligible stone or piece to a laboratory such as GIA or IGI. The customer is responsible for the laboratory fee, shipping, insurance and any setting or removal costs, and should confirm eligibility directly with the laboratory before submitting jewelry. A third-party report is included with a LumGem purchase only when the product page specifically names the institution and report.
